The Alleppey–Kottayam state ferry runs through the same canals the houseboats use, takes two and a half hours, and costs about thirty rupees. There is a genuine case for a houseboat night — but there is no case at all for a houseboat day trip, which is the same canals at ten times the price with a diesel engine running. Stay in a village homestay on the water and take the ferry.

When to go
November to February is dry and pleasant. August brings the Nehru Trophy snake boat race, which is extraordinary and books out months ahead. June to September is heavy rain.

Eating
Superb. The sadya is entirely vegetarian by tradition and a full one costs ₹70. Vegans should note that ghee and curd appear by default — say so clearly and Kerala will cook around it.
