Everything you have been told about Ladakh is true and most of what you have been quoted for it is inflated. Two days doing nothing in Leh is not a wasted start, it is the difference between a good trip and a headache that lasts a week. After that, the shared taxi stand and the Ladakh bus service will take you almost everywhere a private car will, for a tenth of the cost.

When to go
May to September is the season. The Manali and Srinagar highways open around late May and close by October. Winter is possible but specialised — this is Chadar trek season, not sightseeing season.

Eating
Very easy. Buddhist Ladakh cooks a great deal of vegetarian food and Leh's café strip caters to every diet going. Vegan is workable in Leh, harder in the villages where butter and curd are staples.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Prepaid mobile connections do not work in Ladakh at all. Arrange a postpaid SIM before you arrive or plan to be offline.
AMS is common and occasionally fatal. Do not fly in and drive to Pangong the same day, whatever the agency says.
Inner Line Permits are needed for Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri and Turtuk. Any Leh agent arranges them in a day.
How to do it cheaper:
Shared taxis from the Leh stand cost a fifth of a private booking for exactly the same journey.
The taxi union publishes fixed rates. Ask for the card and the haggling ends.
Village homestays in Sham valley include two meals and cost less than a Leh hotel room.
