Munnar
Tea slopes to the horizon, a 2,640 m peak you can book onto, and a flower that blooms once every twelve years.

Munnar is the most photographed hill station in South India and still worth it, provided you do two things: come on a weekday, and get out of the town. The tea estates run for thirty kilometres in every direction and the road is empty by eight in the morning. Meesapulimala, the second-highest peak in the Western Ghats, can only be walked with the forest development agency — book it before you arrive or you won't get on.
Instead of Ooty. Best for couples, groups and families. Best months: Jan–Mar, Jul–Dec.
When to go
September to March is the window — clear, cool and green after the rains. April and May are hot and hazy; June to August is heavy monsoon with landslide closures on the ghat roads.

Eating
Vegetarian is the default at every meals joint in town, and Kerala does it better than almost anywhere. Vegan is harder — coconut oil is fine, but ghee and curd appear without being mentioned. Say 'no curd, no ghee' explicitly.

What goes wrong:
Weekends and Kerala school holidays turn the town into a traffic jam. Come Monday to Thursday.
Meesapulimala cannot be walked independently. People arrive assuming they can and are turned away.
The ghat roads close for landslides in heavy monsoon, sometimes for days.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay 8 km out in Chithirapuram: better view, half the price, ten minutes by bus.
Eravikulam tickets sell out online in season — book the first slot of the day.
Take the ₹30 state bus to Top Station instead of a ₹1,500 taxi. Same view, same road.
