Ooty & Coonoor
A rack railway through tea country, the highest peak in the Nilgiris, and a quieter sister town twenty kilometres down the line.

Ooty is the hill station every Tamil and Kannada family has visited, and its lake and garden are busy from April to June. The trick is to use it, not stay in it. Ride the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway up from Mettupalayam, base yourself in Coonoor or a tea-estate homestay, and treat Ooty's lake and Botanical Garden as a morning trip. Doddabetta, Avalanche and the Pykara side are where the Nilgiris still look like the postcards.

When to go
October to March is clear, cold and the best time for views. April to June is peak season, with the flower show in May and weekend traffic jams. July and August are wet and misty — beautiful, but the toy train can be cancelled for landslips.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Private vehicles coming into the Nilgiris need a Tamil Nadu e-pass, with daily caps on weekends and holidays. Check the current rules before you drive up.
Single-use plastic, including small water bottles, is banned in the Nilgiris, and there are checks at the entry points. Carry a steel or refillable bottle.
The toy train sells out weeks ahead, and landslips cancel it in heavy rain. Have a bus as a backup plan.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay in Coonoor, not Ooty. Cooler, quieter, cheaper, and on the toy-train line.
If the Mettupalayam seats are gone, take the bus to Coonoor and ride only the Coonoor–Ooty stretch.
Doddabetta at 8 am, Botanical Garden at 9:30 am, and lunch before the tourist buses arrive.
