Prambanan is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Central Java, built for the Trimurti: its tallest shrine is dedicated to Shiva, flanked by shrines to Brahma and Vishnu and to their vahana (mounts), with Ramayana reliefs carved around the Shiva and Brahma temples. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1991) and the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia, and Indonesia's Hindu community still holds major ceremonies here. The same ticket covers Candi Sewu, a large Buddhist temple next door, which shows how Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms built side by side in old Java.
Step 2 of 8Next: Visiting rules↓Visiting rules
Visiting with respect
- The shrines are dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu and are still used for Hindu ceremonies: if a ceremony is under way, keep your distance and do not walk through offerings.
- Do not sit or stand on the reliefs, statues or loose stones, and never mark the stone.
- Inside the inner sanctum of the Shiva temple, keep quiet and let worshippers have space in front of the images.
Hours and rules can change for festivals and services. Check the official site on the day.

What to book ahead
Where to stay and eat
Stay
Stay in Yogyakarta, not at Prambanan: Prawirotaman, south of the kraton, has the city's cheapest guesthouses. Budget doubles have listed from about Rp124,000 (about ₹600, a discounted OYO rate) and small hotels from about USD 19-34 (₹1,600-2,900) a night on 2026 booking-site snapshots. Rates change with dates, so check your own.
Food
Yogyakarta's warung food is cheap and filling: gudeg (young jackfruit stewed in palm sugar and coconut milk) is the city's signature, and there are vegetarian options with tempeh and tofu almost everywhere. Large bags and outside food are reported to be restricted inside the temple zone, so eat in town or at the stalls by the park entrance and carry water.
