Trail up to 1343m. Permits: Forest permit at the Nagodi checkpost. Jeeps up the last stretch are controlled.

Trail up to 2100m. Permits: Forest department permit with a strict daily cap. The counter opens early and the quota is gone by mid-morning in season.

Trail up to 2850m. Permits: Camping rules on the ridge have changed several times. Check locally before carrying a tent.

Trail up to 3022m. Permits: None for the standard route.

Trail up to 826m. Permits: None. Village homestays at Udhewadi at the top.

Trail up to 1712m. Permits: Forest permit at Kukke with limited daily numbers and ID required. Book on the Karnataka forest portal where available.

Trail up to 1608m. Permits: Wildlife sanctuary permit at the Iruppu gate, with a guide required on some sections.

Trail up to 2640m. Permits: Bookable only through the Kerala forest development agency. Independent entry is not permitted and people are turned away.

Trail up to 3810m. Permits: Forest camping permit, usually arranged by whoever you walk with.

Trail up to 4270m. Permits: Forest permit required. Vehicle restrictions apply on the Rohtang side of the crossing.

Trail up to 2730m. Permits: None. There is a temple guesthouse at the top.

Trail up to 3636m. Permits: Permit at Manebhanjan and a compulsory registered guide — the trail crosses in and out of Nepal.

Trail up to 2452m. Permits: Inner Line Permit required for Nagaland, including for Indian citizens. Arrange in Dimapur or online.

Trail up to 3658m. Permits: National park permit with a daily entry cap. No camping inside the valley — you walk in from Ghangaria each day and walk out.

Trail up to 4200m. Permits: Protected Area Permit, plus a registered operator and guide — independent trekking is not allowed here.

Trail up to 4940m. Permits: Protected Area Permit and trekking permit. Minimum group of two; registered operator required.

Trail up to 4650m. Permits: Forest permits at both ends of the crossing.

Trail up to 5319m. Permits: Forest permit. Glacier crossing; prior high-altitude experience is expected, not optional.

Trail up to 3390m. Permits: Medical fitness certificate, wildlife permit, registered operator, and a quota system that caps numbers.

Trail up to 1868m. Permits: Online lottery with a strict daily quota and a season of only a few weeks. Entry rules have changed over time — check the current position.

Trail up to 2700m. Permits: None. This is one of Europe's great permit-free walks.

Trail up to 1795m. Permits: None. Waymarked throughout.

Trail up to 3400m. Permits: None for Song-Kul. Border-zone permits are needed for Kol-Suu and some southern areas.

Trail up to 3937m. Permits: None, but a guide is strongly advised — cloud closes in fast above the tree line.

Trail up to 2200m. Permits: Village entrance fee at Cocachimba; local guides are compulsory on some sections.

Trail up to 2170m. Permits: No permit required. Pay the estate entry fee at the gate, and hire a jeep only through the Suryanelli jeep stand. Private cars are not allowed on the estate track.

Trail up to 1778m. Permits: The climb is only open in the season the forest department announces (from February 2026 this year). A medical fitness check at the base is mandatory, and plastic is removed at the check-post. Temple custom has long restricted women of menstruating age from the climb, so check the current position before planning.

Trail up to 2000m. Permits: None for Dolphin's Nose and Echo Point. Longer trails beyond, such as the walk down to Vellagavi village, are best done with a guide or as a Trek Tamil Nadu guided trek.

Trail up to 1300m. Permits: A small entry ticket at the top of the steps. Bathing is banned when the falls are in spate.

Trail up to 1320m. Permits: None. A local guide from the village is optional but helpful for the route.

Trail up to 1880m. Permits: Guided treks only, with forest department permission. After the fatal forest fire of March 2018, unguided treks here were banned. Book the current Kurangani trails through Trek Tamil Nadu (trektamilnadu.com), the forest department's official portal. Treks are closed in fire season.

Trail up to 2073m. Permits: Forest department entry ticket at the checkpoint. Numbers are limited per day, and the trek closes without notice in bad weather — confirm it's open before you travel to the base.

Trail up to 1200m. Permits: None. The hill and cross at the summit are open to all.

Trail up to 1100m. Permits: None for the main valley trail. The longer route towards Agasthyakoodam needs a separate forest department permit and is a different, multi-day undertaking.

Trail up to 1100m. Permits: Gavi is entirely forest-department managed. Book a package in advance — walk-ins are generally turned away, and vehicle numbers into the reserve are capped.

Trail up to 1200m. Permits: Forest department entry at the base. Group treks with a local guide are the usual arrangement.

Trail up to 1300m. Permits: Forest department entry ticket and, for the deeper trail, a guide arranged at the checkpoint.

Trail up to 4500m. Permits: ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS card required for all trekkers, checked en route — arrange both in Pokhara before starting; fees are revised periodically so confirm current rates.

Trail up to 4650m. Permits: No government trekking permit or daily cap, unlike the Inca Trail — just a Machu Picchu entrance ticket (and return train/bus from Aguas Calientes), so it can be booked close to travel dates; check current Machu Picchu ticket rules as these change.

Trail up to 4562m. Permits: Licensed mountain guide and armed park ranger are legally mandatory inside Arusha National Park; park entry, hut/camping and rescue fees are bundled through a registered trekking operator — confirm TANAPA's current published tariff before booking.

Trail up to 1472m. Permits: DOC Great Walks hut/campsite booking is mandatory in the Great Walks season (late Oct-Apr) — book online the moment the season opens as beds sell out fast; check current DOC fees, they rise yearly.

Trail up to 2752m. Permits: No permit required, but every rifugio bed must be booked directly with that hut (phone/email or via rifugi.it) — do this 6-9 months ahead for July-August, there's no single central booking system.

Trail up to 4167m. Permits: A licensed mountain guide is legally mandatory inside Toubkal National Park (under Morocco's tourist-guide law, Loi 05-12) — book through a registered Imlil guides' bureau, not an informal freelancer.
