A UNESCO site that only exists for about ten weeks a year, when the snowmelt and the monsoon turn a high valley into three hundred species of wildflower.
6 days, Medium grade, up to 3,658m. Best season: Jul–Sep only. Base: Govindghat, via Joshimath. Suits: Solo, Couple, Group.
How to reach it
Train to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then a ten-hour bus to Joshimath and on to Govindghat.
Permits
National park permit with a daily entry cap. No camping inside the valley — you walk in from Ghangaria each day and walk out.
Gear
Rain gear, this being peak monsoon. Boots with grip; the path is wet stone.
