Munsiyari is a small hill town at the far end of Kumaon, facing the Panchachuli range across the Gori Ganga valley. It is the start of the old Johar trade route to Tibet, and the villages around it run some of Uttarakhand's best community homestays. There is no lake, no mall road and no traffic jam: you come for the view, the Khaliya Top hike and the village walks. Allow four nights: one long day to get in, two full days, one to get out.

Why Munsiyari, instead of Nainital: The five Panchachuli peaks filling the window of a ₹900 homestay, at the end of a ten-hour mountain road from Haldwani.

Mistakes to avoid

  • The road from Haldwani is long and narrow, and landslides close it in the monsoon. Avoid July and August, and do not plan a tight onward connection.
  • Going beyond Munsiyari towards Milam or the Tibet border needs a permit; foreign nationals need an Inner Line permit. Check with the SDM office in Munsiyari before you set out.
  • The heli-taxi from Haldwani has been reported suspended. Do not plan around it unless the operator confirms.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the 5 am KMOU bus from Haldwani for ₹640 instead of a ₹5,000 taxi.
  • Stay in a Sarmoli village homestay: all meals included, a guide on the doorstep, and the money stays with the village.
  • Come in October: post-monsoon air gives the clearest Panchachuli views of the year.
