Kudremukh Peak trek

A demanding full-day trek through rolling shola-grassland to Karnataka's second-highest peak, inside a protected national park recovering from past iron-ore mining. A local guide is strongly recommended given the terrain and the park's conservation rules.

How to reach it

From Chikmagalur or Kalasa, taxi to the Kudremukh forest department checkpoint where the trek begins.

Permits

A forest department permit is mandatory, with numbers sometimes capped and the trek often closed entirely in monsoon and other periods for conservation reasons — confirm current status directly with the forest office before travelling.

Gear

Proper trekking shoes, 3 litres of water, sun protection and a rain layer — weather changes fast at this altitude.
