Agumbe & Kudremukh
The wettest place in South India, a sunset point over the Arabian Sea, and rainforest where king cobras are studied rather than feared.
Agumbe gets seven metres of rain a year and is where the Western Ghats fall away to the coast in one go — which is why the sunset point looks over the sea from 800 m up. The rainforest research station here studies king cobras. Kudremukh, an hour north, is a national park with a grassland peak walk through shola forest. Together they are the monsoon trip that people who know the Ghats actually take.
Instead of Munnar in the rains. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan, Jun–Dec.
When to go
Two different trips. June to September is the monsoon, which is the point — leeches, waterfalls, cloud. October to February is dry, clear and the only time the sunset point reliably delivers.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Leeches in the monsoon are not a minor irritation here — this is the wettest forest in the south. Salt, tobacco or proper leech socks.
The Agumbe ghat road in heavy rain has landslides and near-zero visibility. Do not ride it on a scooter.
Kudremukh requires a permit and a guide and the quota is checked at the gate.
How to do it cheaper:
