Jog Falls
The Sharavathi river falls 253 metres in four separate streams — Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani — and in the monsoon it is loud enough to feel through your feet.

Jog Falls is one of India's tallest waterfalls, formed where the Sharavathi drops off the edge of the Western Ghats plateau in an undammed stretch. It's remote enough that it never became a resort town — there's a viewpoint, a small park, and steep old steps down to the base that open only outside monsoon. Come for the roar of July–September, or for the clear-day views and swimmable pools of the cooler months.
India's second-highest plunge waterfall, without a single hotel chain in sight. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Mar, May–Dec.
When to go
July to September is when the falls are at their thundering, four-stream best, though mist can hide the view and the base steps close for safety. October to February gives clear views and a swimmable pool at the base. April–May the falls can reduce to a trickle, since the Sharavathi is also dammed upstream for hydropower.

The base steps close whenever flow is dangerously heavy — never attempt them against local advice.
In peak dry months (April–May) the falls can reduce to a trickle since the river is dammed upstream — check current flow before a long trip purely for the falls.
The falls are genuinely remote; plan transport onward before you arrive rather than assuming frequent buses.
How to do it cheaper:
Visit just after the monsoon (October) for both strong flow and a safely open base trail.
Base yourself in Sagar for more food and stay options at lower prices than at the falls.
Combine it with Sringeri or Murudeshwar rather than a standalone day trip — the road here rewards a longer Malnad loop.
