Gokarna
Five beaches strung along a cliff walk, a working temple town at one end, and rooms at half what Goa charges in the same week.
Gokarna is what Goa's backpacker coast was twenty-five years ago, and it survives because there is no airport and the beaches are joined by a footpath rather than a road. Walk the cliff path from Kudle to Om to Half Moon to Paradise in a morning; sleep in a hut on whichever one you liked. The town itself is a serious pilgrimage site — dress for it.
Instead of North Goa. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–Mar, Oct–Dec.
When to go
November to February is dry and warm. June to September the sea is dangerous, the cliff path is mud, and most beach shacks close entirely.

Eating
The town is a temple town: overwhelmingly vegetarian, and no alcohol is served near the temple. The beaches are the opposite — seafood everywhere. A vegetarian eats extremely well and extremely cheaply in town, and adequately on the sand.

What goes wrong:
The sea has strong currents and there are drownings every season. Swim where other people are swimming.
Paradise Beach has been cleared and restricted more than once — check the current position locally rather than trusting an old blog post.
This is a pilgrimage town. Beachwear in the temple streets causes real offence.
How to do it cheaper:
Walk in. Outside the last two weeks of December, Gokarna is the most negotiable accommodation market on the west coast.
Eat in town, sleep on the beach — the price difference is 60%.
Train in, bus out: the Konkan Railway run north at sunrise is worth the trip on its own.
