Short answer
About ₹4,900 per person for a two-day weekend from Bengaluru, travelling by KSRTC non-AC sleeper bus both ways and sleeping in a beach hut. A couple pays about ₹4,400 each, because the room splits. Shoestring travellers can do it for about ₹3,700. A three-day long weekend is about ₹6,300.
Gokarna is the beach trip Bengaluru can actually afford. The sea is the same as Goa's, the beaches are emptier, and the best thing to do there, the cliff walk from Kudle to Paradise beach, costs nothing. What decides your total is four choices: bus or train, hut or hotel, town meals or beach shacks, and walking or hiring.
Every price below comes from Trip Under's Gokarna page and our cost model, except the bus and train fares, which we checked on booking sites on 10 October 2026. Where a fare could not be confirmed, we say so.
The weekend cost at a glance
This is one person, mid-range, two days on the ground, with the overnight sleeper bus both ways. Each day on the ground includes a bed, three meals, local travel and small fees.

Getting there from Bengaluru: bus or train
Gokarna is about 485 km from Bengaluru, roughly 10 to 12 hours by bus, according to Karnataka Tourism. Both of the cheap options run overnight, which saves you a night's bed.
| Option | Departure and time | Fare (seen 10 Oct 2026) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| KSRTC Pallakki, non-AC sleeper | Leaves around 20:15–20:45, about 10–12 h | about ₹1,050–1,075 | The cheapest bed on wheels. Drops in Gokarna town. |
| KSRTC Airavat Club Class, AC semi-sleeper | Leaves around 22:00, arrives about 07:00 | from about ₹1,230 | A seat, not a bed. More comfortable than it sounds. |
| Panchaganga Express (16595) | KSR Bengaluru 18:50, Gokarna Road 06:57 next day, about 12 h | 3AC about ₹1,070–1,080; sleeper fare not confirmed | Gokarna Road station is about 10 km from town. Take an auto. |

From your door to the last beach
The whole beach chain is walkable. Karnataka Tourism puts the Kudle to Paradise walk at 2 to 4 hours over rocky headlands.
Book the train 60 days ahead. The Panchaganga Express fills fast on long weekends, and Indian Railways opens bookings 60 days before the journey. Buses can usually be booked a week out, except over Christmas and New Year.
Where to stay, and what it costs

The beach you sleep on matters more than the room. Kudle is ten minutes from town and has the most choice. Om is busier. Half Moon and Paradise are walk-in or boat-in only, with very basic huts.
| Stay | Where | From (per night) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach hut | Kudle or Om beach | ₹600 | Walk in outside December and pay a third of the online rate. |
| Dorm | Kudle beach | ₹500 | The social centre of gravity here. |
| Sea-view room | Om beach cliff | ₹1,600 | Book ahead for late December only; walk in the rest of the season. |
| Hotel room | Gokarna town | ₹2,200 | The only sensible option with luggage or older parents. |
These are Trip Under's typical rates. The cheapest trick still works: outside the last two weeks of December, walk in and ask, rather than booking online.
Food: the cheapest meal is in town
| What | Typical price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Temple-town veg thali | ₹80 | In town, near the main temple. Cheaper and better than anything on the sand. |
| Beach shack thali or fried rice | ₹180 | You are paying for the sea view. Fair enough. |
| Fresh fish, grilled, Om beach | ₹350 | Ask the price per piece before it goes on the grill. |
| Filter coffee and banana bun | ₹40 | Every morning, in town, before the walk. |
Eat breakfast and lunch in the temple town and save the beach shack for one sunset dinner. That one habit cuts the food line of the receipt by close to half.
What to do, and what it costs
| Activity | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| The full cliff walk, Kudle to Paradise | Free | 3 h |
| Mahabaleshwar Temple | Free | 1 h |
| Sunrise yoga on Kudle | ₹400 | 1 h 30 m |
| Dolphin boat at dawn | ₹600 | 2 h |
| Half Moon beach overnight | ₹700 | Overnight |

Karnataka Tourism describes boats from Om to Half Moon and Paradise, and dolphin-spotting rides at Om. Boat fares are set locally and we could not confirm them, so agree the price before you get in.

Jan: Best · Feb: Best · Mar: Good · Apr: Passable · May: Avoid · Jun: Avoid · Jul: Avoid · Aug: Avoid · Sep: Passable · Oct: Good · Nov: Best · Dec: Best
From Trip Under's season scores. Karnataka Tourism calls October to February the best time, and closes the beaches to swimming from June to September.
October to February is the sweet spot. Rates jump in the last two weeks of December. The monsoon (June to September) is cheapest and greenest, but the sea is closed to swimming and the cliff paths get slippery.
How to do it for about ₹3,700
- Take the non-AC sleeper, both ways. It is the cheapest option and it saves two nights of beds.
- Sleep in a hut or dorm at Kudle and walk in rather than booking online, outside late December.
- Eat in the temple town. A veg thali there costs less than half a shack plate.
- Walk the beaches. The cliff path links all four. A scooter is only worth it for Yana or Mirjan Fort.
- Go Monday to Thursday if you can. Weekend room rates are the biggest variable.
Safety and temple rules
- The main beach is not for swimming. Karnataka Tourism warns of strong currents. People drown at Gokarna most seasons, as news reports show, so swim only where others swim, in calm water, and never after drinking.
- June to September: beaches are closed for swimming and water sports, and the treks become risky (Karnataka Tourism).
- Netrani Island is a restricted Navy area. Landing is not allowed.
- Mahabaleshwar Temple: open 06:00–12:30 and 17:00–20:00, with changes on festival days. Karnataka Tourism says jeans and shorts are not allowed. Men wear a dhoti or lungi and may remove their shirt before the inner sanctum, and women wear a saree or salwar. Vehicles cannot reach the temple; walk the last ten minutes through the bazaar.
