Gokarna vs Varkala: Which Beach Trip Is Right for You?

Two west-coast beach towns that people choose instead of Goa. Gokarna is wilder and cheaper; Varkala is a cliff-top café town with easier swimming. Here is how they compare on cost, getting there, safety and the trip you actually want.

The verdict

Pick Gokarna for cheaper, emptier beaches linked by a cliff walk, and an easy overnight bus from Bengaluru. Pick Varkala for cliff-top cafés, a softer first beach trip and lifeguarded swimming at Papanasam. Weekend cost from Bengaluru: about ₹4,900 for Gokarna vs ₹5,500 for Varkala per person.

Jun–Seprough sea, both

Both towns trade on being "not Goa". The difference is in the shape of the coast. Gokarna is a chain of separate coves joined by a rocky path, where you walk from beach to beach. Varkala is one long red cliff above one beach, lined with cafés, where you sit and look at the sea.

Who should pick which

Pick Gokarna if you…want to walk from beach to beach, sleep in a ₹500–600 hut, avoid crowds, and take an easy overnight bus.
Pick Varkala if you…want a café on a cliff, a lifeguarded beach, a train door to door and a gentler first beach trip, maybe with family.

Gokarna: what it does better

Gokarna is the cheaper and wilder trip. The overnight bus saves a night's bed, huts are cheap if you walk in outside late December, and the best thing to do, the cliff path linking four beaches, is free. Half Moon and Paradise have no road at all.

Varkala: what it does better

Varkala is the more comfortable trip. The train drops you two kilometres from the beach, the cliff is one walkable strip of cafés and guesthouses, and Papanasam beach has lifeguards. Kerala Tourism describes the red laterite cliffs and mineral springs; the beach is also a place for Hindu rites for ancestors, so be respectful near the temple end.

The cliff is eroding. A December 2024 Lok Sabha answer from the central government recorded that geological and human factors are destabilising the Varkala cliff. News reports describe parking and vehicle restrictions on the North Cliff from October 2024, and a section near Papanasam collapsing after rain on 5 July 2026, with no injuries. Stay back from the edge, especially at night and after rain.

Trip Under's season scores, identical for both. Karnataka Tourism gives October to February as Gokarna's best time.

October to February is the season for both. Prices peak over Christmas and New Year. The monsoon (June to September) is cheap and green, but the sea is rough and swimming is off at both.

Can you do both?

They are about 600 km apart on the same coast, linked by the Konkan Railway and onward trains through Mangaluru. It is a week's trip, not a weekend. If you have the week, go north to south: Gokarna, then Udupi or Murudeshwar, then Kerala and Varkala, and fly or train home from Thiruvananthapuram.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Gokarna or Varkala?

Gokarna. A weekend from Bengaluru costs about ₹4,900 per person mid-range vs about ₹5,500 for Varkala, because the bus is cheaper than the train and daily costs are lower.

Which is better for a first beach trip?

Varkala. The train runs close to the beach, everything is along one cliff, and Papanasam beach has lifeguards. Gokarna's best beaches are walk-in only.

Is it safe to swim at Gokarna and Varkala?

Only with care at both. Gokarna's main beach is officially unsuitable for swimming because of strong currents. Varkala's Papanasam beach has lifeguards, but drownings still happen. Swim between flags, in calm water, and never in the monsoon.

Is the Varkala cliff safe?

The cliff is eroding, as a December 2024 central-government answer in the Lok Sabha recorded. Sections have collapsed after heavy rain, most recently reported on 5 July 2026. Keep back from the edge, especially at night and after rain.

How do I get from Bangalore to Varkala?

By train. The 16526 Kanniyakumari Express leaves KSR Bengaluru at 20:10 and reaches Varkala Sivagiri at 10:37 the next morning on aggregator timetables. There is no direct KSRTC bus to Varkala town.
