Coorg vs Chikmagalur: Which Coffee-Hill Weekend Is Right for You?

Both are coffee hills five or six hours from Bengaluru, and both are green and misty after the monsoon. They suit different trips, though. Here is the honest comparison, with costs, scores and the rules that changed in 2025 and 2026.

The verdict

Pick Chikmagalur if you want the cheaper, quieter weekend with the bigger views. Mullayanagiri is Karnataka's highest peak, and the bus and train are easier. Pick Coorg for a family trip with estate homestays, the elephant camp, rafting and the most to do without hiking. Weekend cost from Bengaluru: about ₹4,500 for Coorg vs ₹4,100 for Chikmagalur per person.

On paper these two are the same trip: coffee estates, mist, waterfalls and a homestay breakfast. On the ground they are different. Coorg is the bigger, busier and more organised district, with more to do and more traffic. Chikmagalur is smaller, higher and quieter, and it's cheaper to reach.

Costs come from Trip Under's Coorg and Chikmagalur pages and our cost model, with KSRTC bus fares checked on booking sites on 10 October 2026. The scores are our editorial judgement from that data.

Who should pick which

Pick Coorg if you…are travelling with children or parents, want things to do that are not hikes (rafting, the elephant camp, Bylakuppe), and like the idea of a working coffee estate with Kodava food.
Pick Chikmagalur if you…want the bigger view for less money, are happy to walk up a hill at dawn, and want a quieter weekend with a train option.

Coorg: what it does better

Coorg is the most complete hill district near Bengaluru. Stay on an estate rather than in Madikeri's resort strip, and the homestay will usually include breakfast and dinner, which changes your daily cost completely. Check that before you compare prices.

Chikmagalur gives you the higher, wilder landscape for less money. The cheapest bus is slightly cheaper than Coorg's, there is a direct train, and the daily cost on the ground is lower.

Trip Under's season scores. September to November is the greenest, with full waterfalls.

Both are at their best from September to March. The monsoon (June to August) is lush and cheap on weekdays, but it brings leeches in serious numbers and slippery estate roads. Weekend rates are routinely about double weekday rates in both districts, according to Trip Under's notes.

Can you do both?

Yes, but not in a weekend. They are about four hours apart by road via Hassan or Sakleshpur. With four days, do Chikmagalur first, for the peaks, then drop south to Coorg for the estates and the river. It also works as a loop: Bengaluru, Chikmagalur, Belur and Halebidu (about 60 km from Chikmagalur), Coorg, Mysuru, Bengaluru.
