It's also the best possible timing: the monsoon has just pulled back, so the Western Ghats are green and loud with waterfalls, the sea has calmed on the Karnataka coast, and none of it has hit peak-season prices yet.

1. Coorg — the easy green one

Skip the resort strip in Madikeri and stay on a working estate homestay — you get the same hills for a third of the price and a home-cooked Kodava meal thrown in.
Overnight or early-morning bus out, two nights on an estate, back Sunday night. A scooter covers the waterfalls, Nagarhole's edge and the Tibetan monastery at Bylakuppe without a single taxi.

Same coffee-and-mist landscape, a fraction of the weekend traffic, and Mullayanagiri — the highest peak in Karnataka — is a short drive and an easy walk from the top car park, so you get a big Ghats view without a hard trek. Post-monsoon, the whole district is green and the Hebbe and Kalhatti falls are full.

An overnight sleeper bus drops you in Hospet at dawn, you cross to Hampi, and you've saved a hotel night before the weekend even starts. Rent a cycle or scooter and the entire ruined city — temples, boulder fields, the Vittala stone chariot — is yours for almost nothing.
October is the start of Hampi's season: the fierce summer heat is gone, mornings are cool, and it's not yet the December backpacker crush. Stay on the quieter Hippie Island side for the cheapest beds.

The beach trek from Om to Half-Moon to Paradise beach is free and one of the best things you can do on the coast. By October the monsoon sea has settled and the shacks are reopening.

Take the overnight sleeper bus, not a flight. A return sleeper to Hampi, Gokarna or Badami runs roughly ₹1,200–2,000 and saves you a hotel night on top. Stay in homestays and hostels, not resorts — ₹400–1,200 a night against ₹3,000+. Eat where locals eat — a full meal is ₹60–150 across all of these. Rent a scooter (₹400–600 a day) instead of hiring cars and taxis. Do all four and even the pricier hill trips land near ₹6,000–8,000.
