Coffee estates under mist, and a monsoon that most people treat as a reason to stay away.
Coorg's reputation is as a weekend resort run for Bengaluru, which is true of about six kilometres of it. The rest is estate homestays where the price includes three meals cooked by the family, waterfalls that only exist between June and September, and the highest peak in the district an hour from the bus stand. Go on a weekday in the rain and it costs half what it costs on a dry Saturday.
Instead of Ooty in peak season. Best for couples, groups and families. Best months: Jan–Feb, Jun–Dec.
When to go
Two seasons, both good. July to September is the monsoon, which is when the estates are green, the falls are running and rates are lowest. November to February is dry, cool and busy.

Eating
Coorg is famous for pork, but every homestay and every darshini cooks full vegetarian on request — say so when you book, not on arrival. Kadambuttu and veg curry is the local plate worth asking for by name.

Leeches, from June to September, in serious numbers. Salt, tobacco or leech socks — not optional.
Estate roads are unlit and unsurfaced. Riding a scooter down one at night in the rain is how the trip ends.
Weekend rates are routinely double weekday rates for the identical room.
How to do it cheaper:
Go Monday to Thursday in the monsoon and you will pay half the weekend dry-season rate for a better version of the same place.
Book the homestay that includes meals; it works out cheaper than the room-only one next door.
Buy coffee at the estate gate, not in the town shops — same beans, a third of the price.
