Coorg Nearest Railway Station: Mysuru, Hassan or Kannur, and How to Reach Madikeri
Kodagu (Coorg) has no railway line at all. From Bengaluru and Chennai the easy way is a train to Mysuru, 118 km from Madikeri, and a KSRTC bus up the hill. From Mumbai and the coast it is Mangaluru, and from Kerala it is Kannur or Thalassery. Here are the stations, the fares by class and the bus for the last stretch.

Short answer
Coorg has no railway station. The easiest is Mysuru Junction (MYS), about 118 km from Madikeri, with many trains from Bengaluru: the 12007 Shatabdi (10:35 to 13:00) costs about ₹315 in chair car, and the 16216 Chamundi Express about ₹85 in second sitting. From Mysuru a KSRTC bus to Madikeri was about ₹144 in the January 2025 fare table. The closest station by road is Subrahmanya Road (about 85 km), but it has far fewer trains. From Kerala use Kannur (about 112 km), from Mumbai use Mangaluru (about 130 km).
Coorg is coffee country in the Western Ghats: estates, waterfalls and misty hills around the hill town of Madikeri. It has never had a railway, and the one planned to Kushalnagar has been shelved. So every trip by train ends with a bus or a taxi up the ghats.
How we worked it out. On 5 November 2026 we read the lowest fare per class on ConfirmTkt's route listings for travel on 6 November, checked times on erail, and re-ran road distances with OpenStreetMap routing from each station to Madikeri. Routing times assume clear roads; buses on the ghats take longer. Check IRCTC before you book. You book every piece yourself: Trip Under is not an agency.
Every railway station people use for Coorg
| Station (code) | Distance to Madikeri by road | Drive (clear roads) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subrahmanya Road (SBHR) | about 85 km | about 1 h 15 min | The closest, on the Hassan–Mangaluru ghat line, but few trains. |
| Hassan Jn (HAS) | about 106 km | about 1 h 40 min | Overnight Bengaluru–Mangaluru trains stop here. |
| Thalassery (TLY) | about 108 km | about 2 h | Coming from Kerala. |
| Kannur (CAN) | about 112 km | about 2 h | Coming from Kerala; a Kerala RTC bus runs to Madikeri. |
| Mysuru Jn (MYS) | about 118 km | about 1 h 30 min | The easy pick from Bengaluru and Chennai: most trains, most buses on. |
| Mangaluru Jn (MAJN) / Central (MAQ) | about 130–134 km | about 2 h | Coming from Mumbai, Goa or the coast. |
Is there a railway coming to Coorg? Not soon. The 87 km Mysuru–Kushalnagar line was shelved by the Railway Ministry; South Western Railway's Mysuru divisional manager confirmed this to the Star of Mysore in January 2026, and said it would revive only if the state provides the land.

For budgeting, Trip Under plans the Bengaluru train-and-bus route at about ₹460 per person each way: the Shatabdi in chair car plus the KSRTC bus. Here is how it compares:
| Way in | Route | Time | Fare (per person, each way) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overnight bus | Bengaluru → Madikeri | 6 h | ₹1,200 | KSRTC runs all night. Cheapest and most frequent. |
| Train + bus | Bengaluru → Mysuru, bus to Madikeri | 2.5 h + 3 h | ₹460 | 12007 Shatabdi to Mysuru, chair car about ₹315 (ConfirmTkt, 5 Nov 2026), then the KSRTC bus to Madikeri, about ₹144 (Jan 2025 fare table). Comfortable and cheap. |
| Flight + road | BLR/COK → Mangaluru, then 3 h road | 1 h + 3 h | ₹8,000 | Only worth it coming from outside Karnataka. |
| Car from Bengaluru | Self-drive, 260 km | 6 h | ₹4,500 | Makes sense split four ways — the estates are spread out and buses are slow. |

One person from Bengaluru, return travel plus two days on the ground at Trip Under's Coorg daily rates (₹1,100 shoestring, ₹1,900 mid-range).
The last leg: the bus up to Madikeri
From Mysuru, KSRTC buses run to Madikeri. The January 2025 fare table listed about ₹144; it did not say which bus type, and we could not confirm current Rajahamsa or Airavat fares or the timetable, so check at the Mysuru bus stand. From Kannur, a Kerala RTC bus leaves at 11:00 and reaches Madikeri at 15:45, about ₹128 (a blog updated September 2026). From Mangaluru we found only private buses, from about ₹663.
Skipping the train? KSRTC runs straight from Bengaluru to Madikeri, with the cheapest fares from about ₹365 on booking sites in October 2026, and private sleepers at about ₹650–1,500. Our plan uses about ₹1,200 for the overnight bus.
Coming by train, sleep in Madikeri the first night. The estates, Abbey Falls and Raja's Seat are all reached from there. A state bus links Madikeri to the villages for about ₹40 a ride.

Two seasons, both good. July to September is the monsoon, which is when the estates are green, the falls are running and rates are lowest. November to February is dry, cool and busy.
