A palace lit by ninety-seven thousand bulbs on Sunday nights, a hill temple above the city, and Tipu Sultan's island fortress twenty minutes away.
Mysuru is the rare Indian city that is pleasant to walk, and almost everything worth seeing is inside a four-kilometre radius. The palace is illuminated every Sunday evening and through Dasara, free to watch from the grounds. Srirangapatna, on an island in the Kaveri, is where Tipu Sultan was killed in 1799 and still has his summer palace, his mausoleum and the breach in the wall.

When to go
October to February is cool and dry, and Dasara in September or October is the city at its most extraordinary and most crowded. April and May are hot on the plains.

What goes wrong:
Dasara week fills every room in the city and doubles every rate. Book months ahead or stay out of town.
Palace touts outside the gate sell 'skip the queue' tickets that are not real.
Chamundi Hill steps are unshaded; climb them before eight.
How to do it cheaper:
The Sunday illumination is free from inside the palace grounds. The ticketed show is not the thing people photograph.
The ₹20 city bus goes up Chamundi Hill. Taxis charge fifty times that.
Srirangapatna is a ₹25 local bus away and most Mysuru visitors never go.
