Gingee Fort
Three granite hills joined by walls, a Maratha citadel the British called the 'Troy of the East', and now a UNESCO World Heritage site that is still almost empty.

Gingee is three boulder-strewn hills — Rajagiri, Krishnagiri and Chandrayandurg — linked by 13 km of walls. The Cholas, the Vijayanagara empire, the Marathas, the Mughals, the French and the British all held it. In July 2025, it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Maratha Military Landscapes of India'. Even so, it gets a fraction of Hampi's visitors. The climb up Rajagiri is steep and wonderful.
Instead of another crowded fort. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
November to February is the only comfortable time to climb. From March to September the granite heats up, and the climb is exhausting after 10 am.

The ASI gate closes in the late afternoon, and you must start the Rajagiri climb well before that. Check the current timings.
Monkeys on the hill steal food and bags. Keep everything zipped.
Carry at least two litres of water. There is none on the hill.

Start at opening time, and the climb is cool and the citadel is yours.
Combine Gingee with Tiruvannamalai — 40 km apart and on the same bus route.
It is a UNESCO site with almost none of the crowds. Go now.
