Gingee Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2025 and the cheapest weekend on this list.

Quick picks

Cheapest: Gingee Fort (about ₹3,100) · Closest: Mahabalipuram (90 minutes) · By train: Chidambaram & Pichavaram · Hills: Yelagiri or Kolli Hills · Cafés and the sea: Pondicherry · Day trip: Vellore Fort (₹5 entry)

Most "weekend getaways from Chennai" lists repeat the same three names and give no prices. This one ranks seven overnight trips by what they actually cost a single traveller for two days, mid-range, and adds three day trips that cost less than a cinema ticket to get into.

How we priced it: the bus or train fare both ways, plus Trip Under's daily ground cost for two days (bed, food, local travel and fees), from each place's page and our cost model. Fares are Trip Under's estimates or the lowest fares seen on booking sites on 10 October 2026, and each pick says which. Entry fees come from official sources where we found them.

How to pick

Cheapest weekendGingee Fort or Chidambaram & Pichavaram, both under ₹3,200 for two days.
Cool hillsYelagiri (closer, easier) or Kolli Hills (wilder, needs three days).
With familyMahabalipuram or Chidambaram: short journeys, flat ground, plenty to see.
No overnight at allVellore Fort, Pulicat or Kanchipuram, each a few hours by train.

When to go: the monsoon matters here

The northeast monsoon (October to December) brings Tamil Nadu nearly half its yearly rain, according to IMD. Coastal trips (Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Tranquebar, Pichavaram) can be washed out or have boats stopped. Inland and hill picks (Gingee, Yelagiri, Kolli Hills) cope better. Tamil Nadu Tourism gives November to February as the best time for most of these, and December to March for Gingee.

Book trains at the 60-day window for long weekends. Indian Railways opens reservations 60 days before the journey, and the morning trains to Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai and Jolarpettai fill first.
