Chettinad Travel Guide: The Mansions, the Food and What It Costs
Seventy-odd villages of merchant mansions, most locked, a few open if you knock, and the fiercest food in South India. Here is how to get there, what you can actually get into, and what two days cost.

Chettinad in one line
Take the overnight or afternoon train to Karaikudi, sleep in town or in a mansion homestay, cycle or auto between Kanadukathan, Athangudi and Pallathur, and eat at least four meals. Two days cost about ₹3,700 per person mid-range, including the sleeper train both ways from Chennai.
Chettinad is not one place. It is a cluster of villages around Karaikudi, in Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts, where Chettiar bankers who made fortunes in Burma, Malaya and Ceylon built mansions of teak, marble and tile. Many now stand empty. A few are hotels, a few open for a small fee, and the food alone is worth the trip.
It is Trip Under's pick instead of another Rajasthan haveli town: the same scale of merchant houses as Shekhawati or Jaisalmer, with a fraction of the visitors. Costs below come from our Chettinad page and cost model; train times and fares from erail, seen on 10 October 2026.

How to reach Chettinad
Karaikudi Junction is the station and the base. From Chennai, two trains do the job:
| Train | Leaves Chennai Egmore | Reaches Karaikudi | Fare (erail) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12605 Pallavan Express | 15:40 | 22:30 | 2S about ₹150 |
| 22661 Sethu Express | 17:55 | 00:43 (next day) | SL about ₹255, 3A about ₹685 |
- From Madurai: there is no direct train. Take the bus; Trip Under's estimate is about ₹120 and two hours.
- From Trichy: about 1 hour 45 minutes by train or bus.
- By air: Madurai (IXM) or Trichy (TRZ), then about two hours by road.

What two days cost

Two days in Chettinad, one person, mid-range
Mid-range: ₹1,600 a day on the ground. Shoestring is about ₹2,300; a heritage-mansion stay pushes it to about ₹7,700.
Two people? Share an auto for the day (about ₹1,100 on our estimate) rather than waiting for village buses, which are cheap but infrequent.
The mansions: which ones you can get into
This is the part most guides get wrong. Chettinad mansions are private homes, owned by extended families, and most are locked. What you can actually do:
- Kanadukathan: walk the streets, and knock. Caretakers often show visitors round for a small fee; Trip Under's page puts it at ₹50 to ₹100. The Chettinad Palace here is listed on the district website as open 9 am to 5 pm, but it appears to be private and its opening is not reliable. Check locally.
- Athangudi Palace: one of the most photographed interiors, with painted ceilings and tiled floors. Entry and hours are not officially published.
- Aayiram Jannal Veedu, Karaikudi: the "thousand-window house", built in 1941. It is a private home; see it from outside.
- Heritage hotels: staying in a restored mansion is the surest way inside one. Several in Kanadukathan and Karaikudi also allow non-guests for a meal.

Athangudi tiles: watch them being made
Every mansion floor in Chettinad is laid with Athangudi tiles: handmade cement tiles poured into glass-backed moulds and dried in water, never fired. Around 25 small units still make them in Athangudi village. Weekdays are best; the workshops are working businesses, not museums, so ask before you photograph. Trip Under's page puts a visit at about ₹100.

What to eat
Chettinad food is the reason many people come, and it tastes nothing like the "Chettinad chicken" on menus elsewhere. Tamil Nadu Tourism lists the signature dishes; prices are Trip Under's estimates.
| Dish | About | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Chettinad veg meals | ₹60 | Unlimited, and the vegetarian side of this cuisine is badly underrated. |
| Chettinad chicken or kozhi kuzhambu | ₹220 | The real thing, with kalpasi and freshly ground masala. Nothing like a restaurant version elsewhere. |
| Idiyappam and kavuni arisi | ₹80 | String hoppers, and a black sticky rice dessert brought back from Burma. |
| Filter coffee in a village tea shop | ₹40 | Chettinad takes its coffee as seriously as its food. |
Vegetarian? Better than its reputation — Chettinad vegetarian cooking uses the same complex masalas and is superb. Meals are ₹60 and unlimited everywhere. Say 'veg meals' and you will eat extremely well.
Where to stay
| Stay | Where | About per night | Who for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget room (Lodge) | Karaikudi town | ₹800 | Plain and central. The mansions are all day trips from here. |
| Heritage mansion (Restored Chettiar house) | Kanadukathan | ₹4,500 | Staying in one is the whole point if the budget stretches. Courtyards, teak pillars, silence. |
| Homestay (Family wing of a mansion) | Kothamangalam / Athangudi | ₹1,600 | A handful of families rent rooms. Far better value than the hotels. |
| Mid hotel (AC hotel) | Karaikudi | ₹2,000 | Air conditioning matters here more than character. |
