Chettinad
Seventy-five villages of vast merchant mansions built with Burmese teak and Italian marble, mostly locked, and the fiercest food in South India.
The Chettiars were a banking community who traded across Burma, Malaya and Ceylon and brought the proceeds home to build mansions of a scale that makes no sense in a small Tamil village. Many stand empty; a few are hotels; some open for a small fee if you knock. Karaikudi is the base. The food is the other reason to come and is nothing like the rest of Tamil Nadu.
Instead of another Rajasthan haveli town. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
November to February. April to June on the Tamil plains is severe heat with no relief, and the mansions have no air conditioning.

Eating
Better than its reputation — Chettinad vegetarian cooking uses the same complex masalas and is superb. Meals are ₹60 and unlimited everywhere. Say 'veg meals' and you will eat extremely well.

Most mansions are private property. Knocking is normal; walking in is not.
April to June is severe heat and the old houses, built for it or not, have no cooling.
The antique trade here is stripping the mansions themselves. Buying encourages it.
How to do it cheaper:
A bicycle and ₹200 covers four mansion villages in a day. Nobody does this and it is the best way to see them.
Chettinad vegetarian meals for ₹60 are one of the great underrated plates in India.
Stay in a family homestay inside a mansion wing at ₹1,600 rather than the ₹4,500 hotel version of the same house.
