A thousand-pillar corridor, twenty-two sacred wells, and a town the sea took back in one night in 1964.
Rameswaram is one of India's four most important pilgrimage sites and almost nobody who is not a pilgrim goes there, which makes it strange, cheap and enormous. Twenty kilometres past the temple the road runs out at Dhanushkodi, a town destroyed by a cyclone in 1964 and never rebuilt. Madurai, four hours inland, has the Meenakshi temple and the best street food in Tamil Nadu. Do them together; the train between them costs less than lunch.

When to go
October to March is comfortable. April to June on the island is brutal — there is no shade and the heat comes off the water. October to December can bring cyclone weather.

Eating
Effortless. This is the most vegetarian-friendly corner of India — temple-town restaurants are pure veg by default and the banana-leaf meal is entirely vegetarian. Jain options are available near both temples.

What goes wrong:
The island has almost no shade. April to June is genuinely dangerous for older pilgrims.
Dhanushkodi's last stretch is a sand track — only permitted vehicles go, and the sea has taken the road before.
Dress code is enforced at both temples: covered shoulders and knees, no leather belts or bags at Ramanathaswamy.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay within walking distance of the temple and your transport cost drops to almost nothing.
The ₹25 local bus goes to Dhanushkodi. Taxis charge fifty times that for the same road.
