Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the great Murugan temple of Jaffna and the spiritual heart of Sri Lankan Tamil Saivism. An earlier temple on the site, linked to the kings of Jaffna, was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1624; the present kovil was rebuilt from 1749 and has grown since, with a golden-gated nine-storey Raja Gopuram added in 2011. Murugan is worshipped here in the form of the Vel (his spear), and the temple is known for strict ritual order and pujas that start exactly on time. For Tamils in Sri Lanka and across the diaspora, the August festival is the year's biggest homecoming.

Step 2 of 8Next: Visiting rules

Visiting rules

Opening hoursOpen daily from early morning to evening around the pujas: about 5:00, 10:00, 12:00, 16:15, 16:30, 17:00 and 18:45 (Lonely Planet listing, undated). The temple has no official website with a timetable; confirm at the temple. Hours run longer during the 25-day festival.
Entry feeFree
What to wearMen bare-chested (shirts and vests off) with legs covered, ideally a veshti; women in a sari or modest clothing; shoes off (Lonely Planet, Hinduism Today, Tales of Ceylon).
PhotographyNo official rule published. Visitors report that cameras and phones are restricted inside the temple; do not photograph inside the inner halls or during puja. Photographing the gopuram and the festival processions from outside is common.

Visiting with respect

  • Arrive before the puja begins and stand quietly; the temple keeps strict time and order.
  • Men take off their shirts at the gate, and everyone walks barefoot and moves clockwise around the shrines.
  • Give way to devotees fulfilling vows during the festival: rolling (angapradakshinam), carrying kavadi or walking with piercings.

Hours and rules can change for festivals and services. Check the official site on the day.

Where to stay and eat

Stay

Jaffna has simple family guesthouses close to the temple. Snapshot listings show rooms about 400 m to 2 km from Nallur from about US$14-32 a night (about ₹1,200-2,750), with three-star hotels in Jaffna town averaging about US$38-41. Prices and demand jump during the festival in August-September.

Food

Jaffna Tamil cooking is its own cuisine: dosai, idiyappam (string hoppers), pittu, and vegetarian rice and curry in the many 'saivam' (vegetarian) restaurants around Nallur and the town. Seafood and crab curry are the other Jaffna speciality, but keep meat away from the temple. During the festival, stalls along the temple roads sell sweets and drinks.

Local tip: Go for the 17:00 or 18:45 puja, when the drums and nadaswaram play and the lamps are carried round. Wear a veshti if you have one, carry your shirt in a bag, and leave shoes with your tuk-tuk driver or at the shoe stand.
