The Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health at Velankanni, on the Bay of Bengal coast, is one of the most visited Marian shrines in Asia and is often called the Lourdes of the East. Catholic tradition tells of Our Lady appearing here to a shepherd boy carrying milk and to a lame buttermilk seller, and of Portuguese sailors who survived a storm and built the first chapel in thanks. Pilgrims of every faith come to ask for healing, walk or kneel the path to Our Lady's Tank, tonsure their heads and leave votive offerings. Masses are said daily in Tamil, English, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Konkani.

Visiting with respect
- Keep silence in the Basilica and do not walk around during Mass; join or step out quietly.
- Pilgrims crawl the path to Our Lady's Tank on their knees and tonsure their heads as vows: leave them space and do not photograph them without permission.
- Offerings (candles, wax ex-votos, flowers) are given at the shrine counters, not left on the altars.
Hours and rules can change for festivals and services. Check the official site on the day.
