Jaffna is Sri Lanka's Tamil capital, cut off for decades by the war and still missing from most itineraries that loop Colombo, Kandy and the south coast. It is a flat, palmyra-lined peninsula of Hindu temples, a rebuilt public library, a Dutch fort and small islands reached by ferry. Colombo is the gateway: the overnight train or a night bus gets you here in about eight hours. Give it three nights: one for the town and Nallur, one for the islands, one for the beaches and the north coast.

When to go
January to March is driest and easiest. The north gets most of its rain late in the year, when island ferries can be cancelled. Summer is hot but dry, and the Nallur festival, about four weeks from mid-August to early September, is the busiest and most spectacular time in town.

Mistakes to avoid
- Landmine clearance continues in parts of the north, especially towards Elephant Pass. Stay on roads and cleared paths and obey warning signs (UK FCDO).
- There is a visible military presence and some High Security Zones. Follow instructions and don't photograph military sites.
- Sri Lanka is rationing fuel with weekly vehicle quotas (UK FCDO, September 2026). Buses and taxis can be disrupted; build in slack.
Ways to spend less
- Take the night train. A reserved seat costs about a tenth of a taxi and you wake up in Jaffna.
- Do Nainativu and Delft on the same day: leave early, the Delft boat goes once.
- Eat at the pure-veg Hindu eateries around Nallur. Big plates, small prices.
