Colombo is where most people land and stay, but Galle gives you a far more walkable and atmospheric few days for less. The whole Fort is a living town inside Dutch-era sea walls, and walking the ramparts, the lanes and the lighthouse corner costs nothing. Get there from Colombo Fort on the coastal train (Rs 240 in third class) or the Southern Expressway bus from Makumbura (Rs 930). Sleep and eat just outside the walls, where prices are lower, and use local buses for Unawatuna, Jungle Beach and Koggala.

Mistakes to avoid
- UK travel advice (updated 21 Sep 2026) does not advise against travel to Galle, but warns that heavy inter-monsoon rain has raised flood and landslide risk across Sri Lanka, and that weekly vehicle fuel quotas can disrupt road travel.
- Many Sri Lankan beaches have dangerous surf or rip currents at certain times of year. Ask locally before swimming, especially in the wetter months.
- Women report verbal and physical harassment in crowded places and occasionally from tuk-tuk drivers at night. Agree tuk-tuk prices first, use the meter or an app, and change vehicles if unsure.
Ways to spend less
- The ramparts, lighthouse corner and Fort lanes, the best part of Galle, cost nothing.
- Third class on the coastal train from Colombo Fort is Rs 240 (about ₹68), against $60-80 for a car from the airport.
- Sleeping and eating just outside the walls roughly halves the cost; the Fort is a five-minute walk away.
