Kanyakumari
The southern tip of India, where the sun rises and sets over the sea, and a glass bridge now links the rock memorial to a 133-foot poet.

Kanyakumari is where three seas meet at India's southern tip. Most visitors do a sunrise, a ferry and leave the same day. The better trip takes two days. Watch the sunrise from the seafront and take the early ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The glass bridge opened in December 2024, so you can now walk straight across to the Thiruvalluvar Statue. Spend the second day at the wooden Padmanabhapuram Palace and the quiet sea fort at Vattakottai, which most tour groups skip.

When to go
October to March is the comfortable window. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon makes the sea rough, and the ferry to the rock stops whenever it is unsafe. Chaitra Pournami, the April–May full moon, is when the moon rises as the sun sets, so book ahead.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
The ferry to the rock stops in rough seas, which is common in the monsoon. Keep a spare morning if the memorial matters to you.
Padmanabhapuram Palace is closed on Mondays and is in Tamil Nadu but run by Kerala. Check its timings separately.
Touts on the seafront sell 'special' ferry tickets. The only ticket you need is from the Poompuhar counter.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay in a sea-view room on the sunrise side, and the sunrise is free from your balcony.
Take the first ferry. With the glass bridge you cover the memorial and the statue before the crowds arrive.
Spend a second day on Padmanabhapuram and Vattakottai. That half of the district is what most visitors miss.
