Sabarimala
A hill shrine reached only on foot, with a virtual queue system that in season is effectively compulsory. This is a pilgrimage in the full sense — most who go observe a 41-day vratham beforehand — and travellers who arrive treating it as a sight are both unwelcome and unprepared for the climb.
2–3 days, from Kochi or Madurai, from ₹2,500 per person. Best time: The main pilgrimage season runs mid-November to mid-January, with shorter monthly openings through the year.. Suits: Solo, Group, Family.

What to book ahead

Where to stay
Dormitories and pilgrim halls at Pampa and Nilakkal, simple and very cheap. Nothing needs a booking site; everything needs you to arrive early.
Food
Free annadanam at Sannidhanam and large subsidised canteens at Pampa. Carry water for the climb.
Local tip: If you are going as a traveller rather than a devotee, read about the vratham and the customs first. This is not a viewpoint with a temple on it, and going unprepared is both disrespectful and physically harder than people expect.
