Pondicherry
A French grid on one side of a canal, a Tamil town on the other, and a bicycle is all you need for both.
Pondicherry works because it is small enough to walk and strange enough to be worth walking. The White Town grid of ochre villas and bougainvillea is four streets by six; cross the canal and you are in a dense Tamil market town that is cheaper, louder and better for food. Auroville is fifteen minutes north and is a serious place, not a day trip attraction — treat it accordingly.
Instead of Goa for a quiet week. Best for solo travellers, couples and families. Best months: Jan–Mar, Oct–Dec.
When to go
November to February is the season. April to June is punishing heat and humidity; October to December can bring cyclone weather off the Bay of Bengal.

Eating
Excellent and easy — Tamil Town is overwhelmingly vegetarian and the ashram-run canteens serve pure veg at almost no cost. Auroville's cafés are the best vegan cooking in the state.

Alcohol is cheap here because of the union territory tax rules, and the road accident statistics reflect it. Be careful on a scooter at night.
The town beach is not for swimming. People try every season.
Auroville is a functioning community, not an attraction. Photographing residents' homes is not welcome.

Sleep in Tamil Town, eat in Tamil Town, spend your days in White Town. Halves the trip cost.
A bicycle beats a scooter here — the grid is small and parking in White Town is genuinely difficult.
Tranquebar, an hour south, is the empty Danish colonial town that Pondicherry would be without the crowds.
