Gandikota
A ruined fort on the lip of a red sandstone gorge, with a mosque, a granary and a Vishnu temple inside the walls, and almost nobody there.

The Pennar river cut a 300-foot gorge through the Erramala hills, and a fort was built on the edge of it in the twelfth century. The result gets called India's Grand Canyon, which oversells the geology and undersells how strange it is to walk through an abandoned fortified village and arrive at a cliff. There is one guesthouse, camping on the rim, and a five-hour drive from anywhere.
Instead of another Rajasthan fort. Best for solo travellers, couples and groups. Best months: Jan–Mar, Aug–Dec.
When to go
November to February only. The Rayalaseema plateau from March to June is 44°C on bare rock, and there is no shade anywhere in the fort.

Straightforward. Rayalaseema vegetarian meals are ₹70 and unlimited, though the chilli level is the highest in India — ask for less if you need to.

The gorge rim is completely unfenced and the drop is 90 metres. People have died taking photographs.
There is no shade in the fort and no reliable water. Carry three litres per person.
March to June is 44°C. Do not attempt it outside November to February.

Everything inside the fort is free. The only cost is getting there and a bed.
Camp on the rim — the sunrise is the entire trip and day visitors miss it.
