The best places to visit in January in India are the ones the cool, dry month suits best: beaches like Gokarna, Varkala and Kannur & Muzhappilangad, ruins like Hampi, Gandikota and Warangal & Ramappa, the White Rann of Rann of Kutch & Bhuj under the 21 to 23 January full moon, and Bundi & Kumbhalgarh and Khajuraho & Orchha in the north and centre. All 18 below are rated best for January. Three days start at about ₹2,900 per person (Warangal & Ramappa, from Secunderabad).
January is when most of India is at its best: the south is dry and warm, and the north has clear days and cold nights. That is why Goa, Jaipur and Manali fill up. Every place below is the quieter stand-in for somewhere like them.
We chose 18 places rated "best" for January in Trip Under's data, 12 of them in the south. Costs are one person, three days, by train or bus from the city named and back, plus beds, food, local transport and fees.

None of our Himalayan places is rated "best" for January. Snow is most likely then, but it also closes roads and ices paths. Here is where you can still go.

- Chopta, instead of Kedarnath in season. The path to Tungnath is snowbound from December to March: beautiful, but you need micro-spikes. Three days from Rishikesh cost about ₹5,000 on a shoestring, by bus and shared jeep.
- Kanatal, instead of Mussoorie. Snow comes from late December to February, and January is the best bet, though not every year. Heavy snow can block the ridge road. Three days from Dehradun cost about ₹5,100 on a shoestring. Check your camp is open and heated.
- Winter treks. Kedarkantha (₹9,000 from the base), Dayara Bugyal (₹11,000 from the base), Kuari Pass (Curzon Trail) (₹10,000 from the base), Brahmatal (₹11,000 from the base) all walk in snow in January. The Chadar frozen-river trek in Ladakh runs January to February only (₹26,000), but the ice is not reliable every year.

Republic Day long weekend 2027
Republic Day 2027 falls on Tuesday 26 January. Take Monday 25 January off and you get four days, Saturday 23 to Tuesday 26 January. That is long enough for an overnight train each way to Hampi, Gokarna, Bundi or Khajuraho. Train bookings open 60 days ahead, so for a Friday 22 January departure that is about 23 November 2026.
Every long weekend of the year, Republic Day included, is in the 2027 long weekend calendar.
Which one for you?
Three tips for a January trip
- Book the peak nights first. The Kutch full moon (21 to 23 January) and the Republic Day weekend go first. At Diu, New Year week is the busiest and priciest.
- Travel overnight. The trains to Hampi, Gokarna, Bundi and Khajuraho are long enough to sleep on, which saves a night's bed.
- Book each piece yourself. Trip Under is not a travel agency. Book the train, room and taxi direct and there is no package mark-up.
