Warangal was the capital of the Kakatiya kings from the 12th to the 14th century, and what they left is spread over three places. The fort and the Thousand Pillar Temple are in the twin cities of Warangal and Hanamkonda, about two hours by train from Secunderabad. The Ramappa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021, is about 70 km further at Palampet, with Laknavaram lake and its hanging bridge in the same district. Give it two nights: one in Hanamkonda for the city sites, one near Ramappa or Laknavaram.

Why Warangal & Ramappa, instead of Hampi: The old Kakatiya capital: a ruined fort of stone gateways, a star-shaped temple in Hanamkonda, and a UNESCO temple at Palampet built with bricks light enough to float.

The monsoon (June to September, about 550 mm) fills Laknavaram and Ramappa lakes and turns the country green, but roads to Palampet can be slow.

Mistakes to avoid

  • April and May reach about 42°C. The fort is open ground with little shade: go at opening time or not at all.
  • Buses to Palampet are few. If you take one, find out the last bus back before you leave Hanamkonda.
  • Entry fees and hours for the fort, Ramappa and Laknavaram differ between sources. Carry small cash and check at each counter.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the train, not the bus: second sitting from Secunderabad starts around ₹80 and some trains take under two hours.
  • Sleep at the TGTDC Haritha at Ramappa (from ₹1,008) so you see the temple in the cool of the morning, before day-trippers arrive.
  • Ramappa and Laknavaram are both in Mulugu district, 19 km and 17 km from Mulugu town. Do them on the same day with one taxi.
