Bidar
A red-laterite fort city that was once the Bahmani Sultanate's capital, with tiled tombs, a 15th-century Persian-style college, and almost no tourist infrastructure at all.

Bidar, tucked into Karnataka's far northeastern corner, was the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate and later the Barid Shahi dynasty — a major centre of Deccan Islamic architecture and Persian learning for two centuries. Its fort, tiled royal tombs and the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa (a ruined but still striking Persian-style college from 1472) sit almost entirely without the crowds or infrastructure of Karnataka's better-known heritage sites. This is a trip for people who want the history without the tour buses.
Deccan sultanate heritage that gets a fraction of Hampi's visitors. Best for solo travellers and groups. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
November to February is coolest and most comfortable for walking the fort and tombs. Summers here (April–June) are very hot, as this is inland northern Karnataka.

This is one of the least tourist-oriented heritage sites in Karnataka — English signage and guides are limited, so a bit of pre-reading helps.
Summer heat here is severe; plan visits for early morning.
Some monument interiors have limited lighting — a torch helps for the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa's inner chambers.
How to do it cheaper:
The fort alone rivals much better-known Deccan sites, at a fraction of the visitor numbers.
Buy Bidriware direct from an old-city workshop rather than a tourist shop elsewhere in Karnataka.
