Vijayapura was the capital of the Adil Shahi sultanate for two centuries, and its skyline is still dominated by their domes and minarets. Gol Gumbaz, Mohammed Adil Shah's mausoleum, is the headline sight — its dome is one of the largest in the world, and the gallery beneath it carries a whisper audibly around its full circumference. But the town has a dozen more Adil Shahi monuments, most of them almost empty, from the elegant Ibrahim Rauza to the old citadel walls.

When to go
November to February is the most comfortable window for a day of monument-hopping. This is inland North Karnataka, so summers (April–June) are very hot.
