A blue town under a palace full of the best murals in Rajasthan, and a fort wall thirty-six kilometres long two hundred kilometres south.

Bundi has a palace, a fort above it, stepwells in the middle of town and a lake, and about one per cent of Jaipur's visitors. The Chitrashala murals inside the palace are the finest surviving Rajput painting anywhere and cost almost nothing to see. Kumbhalgarh, further south, has the second-longest continuous wall in the world after China's, running along a ridge in the Aravallis.
Instead of Jaipur and Jodhpur. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Mar, Sep–Dec.
When to go
October to March. April to June in Rajasthan routinely passes 45°C. July to September is the monsoon, when Bundi's stepwells fill and the Aravallis turn green — unfashionable and rather good.

Eating
Extremely easy. Rajasthan's thali tradition is overwhelmingly vegetarian, unlimited, and ₹80. Jain food is available everywhere without explanation.

What goes wrong:
Taragarh's monkeys are aggressive and numerous. Carry a stick, carry no food, and do not make eye contact.
April to June is 45°C with no shade in any fort. Genuinely dangerous for older travellers.
Kumbhalgarh's walls have no railings and long unguarded drops.
How to do it cheaper:
Bundi costs half what Jaipur costs and has better murals, more stepwells and a tenth of the crowd.
Rooftop rooms with a palace view start at ₹1,100 here. The same view in Udaipur is ₹6,000.
Walk a section of Kumbhalgarh's wall at opening time — you will have the whole ridge to yourself.
