Mandu was the capital of the Malwa sultans, and its palaces, tombs and step-wells are scattered over a green plateau ringed by old walls and gates. The Jahaz Mahal sits between two lakes like a moored ship, and Rupmati's Pavilion looks down a cliff to the Narmada plain: the romantic palace-and-lake trip people take Udaipur for, without the crowds. Indore is the gateway, about 95 km away, with flights and trains from everywhere. Give it two nights so you can do the Royal Enclave one day and the Rewa Kund group and Rupmati's Pavilion at sunset the next.

Why Mandu, instead of Udaipur: A ruined Afghan sultanate on a plateau above the Narmada valley, with a palace between two lakes and a pavilion built for a love story.
