Orchha was the seat of the Bundela kings, and their palaces, temples and royal chhatris still stand along the Betwa river in a village you can cross on foot. It gives you the grand-palace feeling people go to Agra for, without the crowds, touts or ticket queues. Jhansi Junction is the railhead, 17 km away, so most people arrive by train and take an auto. Two nights is right: one day for the fort complex and temples, one for the chhatris at sunset, the river and the forest across it.

When to go
October to February is the comfortable window. MP Tourism also rates the monsoon highly, when the Betwa runs full and the countryside turns green, but river rafting stops then. Avoid April to June: Bundelkhand heat is brutal and the palaces are open stone.
