Maheshwar is the MP weaving town that made it onto the tourist trail. Chanderi is the other one: a working handloom town of fine silk-cotton saris under a hilltop fort, with a 1450 Badal Mahal gateway, the 1445 Koshak Mahal, a 13th-century Jama Masjid and Jain temples including rock-cut Adinath statues at Khandargiri. It has no railway; most people come by road from Lalitpur, about 36-40 km away, or by overnight bus from Bhopal. Two nights is enough for the fort, the monuments and a morning in the weavers' lanes.

Know before you go
Mistakes to avoid
- Fees for the Badal Mahal gate, the fort's sound-and-light show and the museum are not clearly published. Carry small change and check at the gate.
- No railway: the last private bus from Lalitpur has run around 9 pm. Arrive in daylight.
- Sari shops near the monuments push hard. Buying at a loom in Pranpur or the weavers' lanes is cheaper and the money goes to the weaver.
Ways to spend less
- Take the overnight bus from Bhopal: it saves a hotel night and drops you in town in the morning.
- Stay at MPT Kila Kothi below the fort. It costs less than the tent camp and puts the fort walk on your doorstep.
- Visit Koshak Mahal late in the day. The fields around it turn gold and you will likely have it to yourself.
