Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, a colonial-era army cantonment at about 1,067 m surrounded by the Satpura Tiger Reserve and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It is well known inside MP but rarely on anyone else's list, and unlike Mahabaleshwar or Ooty the sights are forest rather than town: Bee Falls, the Pandav caves, the Jata Shankar cave shrine and the sunset from Dhupgarh. Many of the points sit on forest land, so you see them in a registered gypsy, not your own car. Take the train to Pipariya and the bus up the ghat; three nights covers it.

Why Pachmarhi, instead of Mahabaleshwar: A sandstone plateau in the Satpura forest, with waterfalls, cave shrines and Madhya Pradesh's highest viewpoint, all inside a tiger reserve.

When to go

October to February is the main season: cool and clear, with December and January mornings near single digits. March to June is warmer but still cooler than the plains. July to September is monsoon, when the waterfalls are at their fullest but some viewpoints and trails may be closed for safety. Pachmarhi stays open all year; it gets crowded and pricier on winter weekends and holidays, and at Mahashivratri, when pilgrims climb to Chauragarh.

Know before you go

CashCarry some for gypsies, entry counters and dhabas.
Cards & UPIMPT hotels take cards and online payment. Small lodges and gypsy drivers mostly want cash or UPI.
Phone signalNot confirmed for the forest points; expect gaps once you leave town.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Many points are inside the Satpura Tiger Reserve. You need a registered gypsy, a forest entry permit and a guide for the forest circuit; current fees are not published online, so ask at the counter and get the total before you set off.
  • The reserve closes to visitors on Wednesday afternoons and on Holi and Diwali. Plan your gypsy day around that.
  • MPT hotels sell out on winter weekends and long holidays (Glen View was full on the date we checked). Book weeks ahead for October to January.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the Jan Shatabdi to Pipariya (₹115 second sitting) and the ₹110 bus up: about four hours from Bhopal for ₹225, against six to eight hours on the direct bus.
  • Find five others for the gypsy. A full vehicle cuts a ₹2,000 day to about ₹350 each.
  • Come midweek between October and February: the weather is at its best and room rates are lower than at weekends.
