Lonavala is Mumbai's default hill escape, and on weekends it is a traffic jam with a view. Bhandardara, about 185 km from Mumbai and 73 km from Nashik, gives you more for the same trip: Arthur Lake behind the Wilson Dam, Randha Falls, the Amruteshwar temple and the trail up Kalsubai, at 1,646 m the highest point in Maharashtra. Take a train to Igatpuri or Kasara and go on by road. Two nights covers the lake, the falls and one trek.

Why Bhandardara, instead of Lonavala: A British-era dam lake under Maharashtra's highest peak, with monsoon waterfalls, a 170-ft gorge drop and fireflies lighting the forest before the rains.

When to go

September to February, just after the monsoon, is the classic season: full lake, green hills, cool nights. Fireflies swarm in the forest from about mid-May to mid-June. July is very wet, and in 2025 the forest department closed Kalsubai and the nearby forts to trekkers until 10 August; check for a similar order before a monsoon trip.

Know before you go

CashCarry cash. Jeeps, dhabas and village homestays mostly want cash or UPI.
Cards & UPIThe MTDC resort and bigger resorts take cards.
Phone signalMain networks work at Shendi; signal drops in the valleys and on treks.

Mistakes to avoid

  • In the monsoon the forest department can close Kalsubai, the forts and Sandhan Valley (in 2025 until 10 August) and cap daily visitors in the Bhandardara range. Check before you go.
  • Randha Falls pools and the dam outflow have strong currents. Do not swim.
  • Fireflies season weekends are packed with camps. Go midweek and keep the forest dark.

Ways to spend less

  • Take the Mumbai local to Kasara instead of a cab from the city. It is the cheapest exit from Mumbai, and camp operators pick up there.
  • Come in September or October: full lake, waterfalls still running, and no monsoon closures or firefly crowds.
  • Share one jeep from Shendi for the whole loop of dam, falls and Amruteshwar. It beats waiting for buses.
