The Great Rann is a seasonal salt desert that dries out white each winter, and Dhordo, about 85 km north of Bhuj, is where you walk out onto it. Bhuj is the base: it has the airport, the railway station, the palaces and the cheap rooms. You need a small online permit to enter the White Rann, and Indian visitors can buy it in a few minutes. Give it three nights: one or two near the Rann for sunset and moonrise, one in Bhuj, and a day for the craft villages or Dholavira.

Mistakes to avoid
- The White Rann is near the Pakistan border. Stay on the public route to Dhordo, Kala Dungar and Dholavira; beyond that the BSF controls access. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border.
- The online permit is for Indian nationals only. Foreign visitors should confirm the current process with the Kutch permit office (02832 251007) before driving out.
- December and January nights on the Rann are cold. Pack a warm layer even if Bhuj was hot at noon.
Ways to spend less
- Buy the ₹100 permit online at rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in before you leave Bhuj, so you skip the queue at Bhirandiyara.
- Stay in a bhunga homestay at Hodka or Dhordo instead of the Tent City: you still get sunset and moonrise on the Rann for half the price or less.
- Pick a full-moon window (23-25 Nov, 22-24 Dec, 21-23 Jan, 19-21 Feb) and book early. Moonlight on the salt is why people come.
