Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and the only one facing south (dakshinamukhi), which gives it a special place among Shaiva devotees. Ujjain itself is one of the seven sacred cities and hosts the Simhastha Kumbh on the Shipra. The temple is best known for the Bhasma Aarti before dawn, when the Jyotirlinga is worshipped with sacred ash prepared under the Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani. Since 2022 the Mahakal Lok corridor of statues and murals has led up to the temple. It is run by the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee under the Government of Madhya Pradesh.

What to wearNo dress code is published for general darshan; modest clothing is expected. For the Bhasma Aarti and entry to the garbhagriha, travel guides consistently report men in an unstitched dhoti without an upper garment and women in a saree; confirm on the booking page, as the committee's exact wording could not be read.
PhotographyMobile phones are banned inside the temple premises (temple committee order), so no photography inside. Photos are fine in the Mahakal Lok corridor.

Visiting with respect

  • Bhasma Aarti is a ritual, not a show: sit where the sevaks place you and stay silent through it.
  • Remove footwear before the temple and leave leather items in the locker.
  • Follow the queue and the sevaks' directions at the Jyotirlinga; darshan is brief on busy days.

Where to stay and eat

Stay

The temple committee runs devotee guesthouses (Bhakt Niwas and Atithi Niwas; online booking is being launched). Around the temple and the railway station there are many dharamshalas and budget hotels. Rates vary widely with season; check live prices, and book well ahead for Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri.

Food

The temple's free Annakshetra near Harsiddhi Square serves meals daily 11:00-19:30 to 7,000-8,000 devotees. Outside, Ujjain's lanes and nearby Indore are known for poha-jalebi breakfasts, dal-bafla, kachori and sweets; food around the temple is vegetarian.

Local tip: For Bhasma Aarti, set an alarm for 8:00 the day before and have your ID details ready: the tatkal quota goes in minutes. If you miss it, the morning Dadyodak and Bhog aartis are easier to see on the regular line.
