Goa is where everyone goes for Portuguese churches and beaches, and it shows in the prices and crowds. Diu has the same story on a far smaller scale: a sea fort the Portuguese built in 1535 and garrisoned until 1960, St Paul's Church from 1610, whitewashed lanes and a string of beaches. The island is joined to Gujarat by a bridge, has its own small airport at Nagoa, and is about 10 hours by bus from Ahmedabad. Two or three nights is right: one day for the town and fort, one for the beaches on a scooter.

Mistakes to avoid
- Naida caves have been reported closed for renovation. Check locally before planning around them.
- June to September is monsoon. The sea is rough and swimming is unsafe.
- Diwali week and New Year fill the island with weekenders from Gujarat; book rooms early or avoid those dates.
Ways to spend less
- Rent a scooter for a day and you can see the fort, churches, caves and three beaches without paying for a single taxi.
- Take the overnight GSRTC sleeper from Ahmedabad: no hotel night, and you arrive at dawn.
- Stay in the old town, not at the beach. It is cheaper and everything you want to see is a walk away.
