Arupadai Veedu — six abodes of Murugan
The six principal Murugan temples of Tamil Nadu, which most families visit over years and which can be done as one continuous loop in under a week if you take them in geographic order rather than the traditional one. Trains and state buses link every stop. A tour operator sells this route for four times what it costs to do yourself.
5–6 days, from Chennai or Madurai, from ₹6,500 per person. Best time: October to February. Thai Poosam (January–February) and Panguni Uthiram (March–April) are extraordinary and extremely crowded — a different trip entirely.. Suits: Family, Solo, Couple.

What to book ahead

| Long-distance trains MUST BOOK | Chennai–Madurai and Madurai–Tiruchendur sleepers fill weeks ahead in season. This is the only thing that genuinely must be booked. |
| Palani winch railway | No advance booking; queue on the day. The 690 steps are free and take about 40 minutes. |
| Temple accommodation | Devasthanam lodges at Palani and Thiruchendur can be booked ahead; elsewhere ordinary lodges are plentiful. |
| Special darshan | None of the six requires paid darshan for a normal visit. Do not let an agent tell you otherwise. |
Where to stay
Temple-run lodges at Palani and Thiruchendur are cheapest and closest. Madurai is the natural base for the two temples near it — stay near the east tower and walk. Ordinary lodges everywhere else run ₹700–1,200.
Food
Banana-leaf meals at every stop for ₹60–80, unlimited. Madurai is worth an extra night on food alone — the night food streets are the best in Tamil Nadu.
Local tip: Do it in geographic order, not the traditional sequence, and it becomes one loop rather than six separate trips. Book only the trains; everything else you do on the day.
