Rameswaram & Madurai
One of the four Char Dham sites paired with the greatest temple city in Tamil Nadu, and the whole thing runs on trains that cost less than lunch. Rameswaram has the longest temple corridor in India and twenty-two sacred wells; twenty kilometres past it the road ends at a town the sea destroyed in one night in 1964.

What to book ahead
| Booking | Why it matters |

| Trains across the Pamban route MUST BOOK | Sell out 30 days ahead in season. This is the one booking that matters. |
| Theertham bath | Pay at the temple counter on the day. Take a change of clothes and a small towel. |
| Accommodation | Lodges near both temples are plentiful outside festival weeks. Walking in is normal. |
| Meenakshi night ceremony | No ticket needed. Arrive by 8:30 pm for the 9 pm procession. |
Where to stay
Stay within walking distance of the temple at both ends — near the east gate in Rameswaram, near the east tower in Madurai. It removes four auto fares a day and costs no more.
Food
₹60 banana-leaf meals everywhere, entirely vegetarian near both temples. Madurai after dark is the reason to add a night: kari dosa, jigarthanda, paruthi paal.
Local tip: The ₹25 local bus goes all the way to Dhanushkodi. Taxis charge fifty times that for the same road, and the last stretch is a sand track only permitted vehicles use anyway.
