Kodaikanal
A lake you cycle around, shola forest you walk into, and a twelve-year flower bloom that draws people from across the country.
Kodaikanal is greener, gentler and considerably less trafficked than Ooty, and the walks start at the edge of town rather than an hour's drive away. Dolphin's Nose and the Vattakanal trail drop straight off the plateau into cloud. The Kurinji flower blooms once every twelve years across these hills, which is the kind of thing worth checking before you plan.

When to go
September to March is the window — clear, cold at night, and green. April and May are busy with domestic holidaymakers; June to August brings heavy rain and landslips on the ghat road.

What goes wrong here, and how to do it cheaper
What goes wrong:
Berijam Lake has a daily permit cap issued that morning at the forest office. Turning up at the gate does not work.
The ghat road closes for landslips in heavy monsoon, sometimes for days.
Weekend and Tamil holiday rates are routinely double, and the bazaar becomes gridlocked.
How to do it cheaper:
Stay in Vattakanal, not the bazaar. Half the price, the walks start at your door, and the mist is better.
Coaker's Walk at dawn costs ₹30 and is empty; by ten it is a queue.
Cycle the lake instead of taking the boat — same water, a fifth of the cost, and you can stop where you like.
