Forty hairpins up to a tea plateau where lion-tailed macaques cross the road, and India's widest waterfall on the way down the other side.
The road to Valparai climbs forty numbered hairpins through the Anamalai tiger reserve, and the plateau at the top is tea estates with rainforest fragments between them — which is why the endangered lion-tailed macaque is easier to see here than anywhere. Almost nobody comes. On the Kerala side, Athirappilly falls drops eighty feet across a river the width of a road.
Instead of Munnar at the weekend. Works for everyone. Best months: Jan–Feb, Jul–Dec.
When to go
August to March, and September to November is the best of it. April and May are hot; June and July bring rain heavy enough to close the ghat road.

Eating
Entirely easy on the Tamil side — pure veg meals for ₹70 are effectively the default. The Kerala side adds fish and beef but veg meals remain everywhere.

What goes wrong:
Elephants cross the ghat and forest roads regularly. Do not stop the vehicle for photographs.
Feeding the macaques is illegal and is destroying the troop. People do it anyway.
The Malakkappara forest road has two buses a day and closes in heavy rain. Check before relying on it.
How to do it cheaper:
The ₹30 bus up the forty hairpins is the whole experience and costs less than a coffee.
Valparai has a fraction of Munnar's visitors for arguably better wildlife and the same tea.
Cross from Tamil Nadu to Kerala by the Malakkappara forest bus — four hours of rainforest for ₹150.
