Tirupati — Tirumala
The most-visited place of worship on earth, and the single most common Indian travel mistake is arriving without a darshan slot. The ₹300 Special Entry Darshan quota is released online in advance and disappears in minutes; the free Sarva Darshan needs no booking but can mean a very long wait in the queue complex. There is also a third option almost nobody uses, and it is free.

What to book ahead

Where to stay
TTD's own guesthouses on the hill are the cheapest and most convenient by a wide margin, and are booked in the same place as the darshan slot. Tirupati town below has ordinary hotels from ₹900 if the hill is full.
Food
Free annaprasadam at Tirumala, served continuously to everyone. Tirupati town has ₹70 veg meals everywhere. There is no reason to spend more.
Local tip: Walking up the 3,550 Alipiri steps gets you a divya darshan token, which is free and usually moves faster than the free queue below. Allow four hours and start before sunrise, before the stone gets hot.
